ABOUT HYBRIDS
In 2007, I created a pixelated three-dimensional painting from an image of a person to explore the concept of a hybrid entity blending digital and human qualities.
The resulting artwork, which combined painting with sculptural elements, I later referred to as Hybrids, both as a description of the medium and a reflection of its metaphorical symbolism.
Up close, the artwork is experienced as an abstract assemblage of cubes of varying heights that function as three-dimensional "pixels." At times, these cubes take the form of flowers or other organic elements, adding layers of interpretation. To perceive the image as a unified whole, tools such as a peephole or a camera can be used, which usually reveals a recognizable face.
This interplay between abstraction and the figurative invites the viewer into an interactive experience, blending fun optical illusions with a deeper exploration of symbolism and metaphor.
Creating these artworks established an ongoing curiosity with digital tools not only to create my own artworks but also to explore ideas about the role of technology in shaping the human condition and evolution.
As I continued exploring other media like digital collages, video, and more recently, generative AI, I maintained my practice of creating Hybrid paintings for commissions. Seeing people's delighted reactions to these interactive works and immortalizing individuals through art remains deeply rewarding.
